Medical Termination

Suitability

Medical termination is available for pregnancies under 9 weeks (63 days gestation). Before proceeding, you will have a confidential consultation with your GP to confirm gestational age (via ultrasound), assess your medical history, and ensure this is a safe and appropriate option for you.

This process is not suitable if you have certain medical conditions, a suspected ectopic pregnancy, or if the pregnancy is beyond the gestational limit. Your GP will discuss all available options with you in a supportive, non-judgemental space

Process

Medical termination involves taking two medications:

  • The first, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone, which is needed to maintain the pregnancy.

  • The second, misoprostol, is taken 24–48 hours later at home. It causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

Most women experience cramping, bleeding (which can be heavier than a period), and other temporary symptoms such as nausea or fatigue. Your GP will explain what to expect, how to manage the symptoms, and when to seek medical attention if needed.

You will be given clear written instructions and 24/7 access to a support line.

Follow-up Consultation

A follow-up consultation is essential to ensure the process is complete and there are no complications. This usually occurs 1–2 weeks later and may include a review of your symptoms and a follow-up ultrasound or blood test.

At this appointment, your GP can also support you in planning ongoing contraception and emotional wellbeing. Some women prefer to speak with a psychologist or counsellor, and referrals can be arranged.
